Grief and Loss Counselling
What is Grief?
How can Charis Counselling help?
What is Grief?
• Grief is our response to loss.
• It is the normal, natural and inevitable response to loss
• It can affect every part of our life
• There are many different types of losses. Death is only one form of loss.
• Grief is the adjustment to a loss and it is experienced as a process.
The Potential Impacts on the Individual
• Sadness
• Shock
• Anger
• Insecurity/fear/anxiety
• Relief
• Depression
• Loneliness
• Numbness
• Yearning
• Difficulty going to sleep, or waking in the middle of the night
• Weight loss or gain; - over or under-eating
• Low energy or fatigue
• Headaches, chest pain, or racing heart
• Upset stomach or digestive problems
• Agitation
• Confusion
• Interrupted thought processes
• Lack of concentration
Everyone grieves differently
There is not a right way or a wrong way it is just different for everyone
There are many factors that influence how we respond to a loss or how we grieve
• Personality factors
• Previous family history – in reacting to loss
• Cultural background
• Previous losses, multiple losses
• Shock/Traumatic Loss
• Other complicating factors
Loss can be cumulative
Multiple losses that can build up over time
The death of a partner
• A close friend/s recently died
• Your parent/s died in the past couple of years
• The death of a child in the past
• Moved to a new area/town a few years ago….with that came the loss of friendship groups and support networks
• The death of a pet
• The loss of a job (even through retirement)
Every Primary Loss comes with Secondary Losses
For example:-
Primary loss - the person who died
Secondary Losses - Loss of income
- Loss of identity
- Loss of dreams for the future
- Loss of faith
- Loss of confidence
- Loss of financial security
- Loss of Support System
Grief and loss is rarely a straight forward process it is usually a very complex journey.
