My Story
Lyn Cannon began her career in counselling roles as a voluntary Youth Worker in the late 1970's. In the 1990's she continued to develop this counselling role whilst sharing the role of school chaplain at Northam SHS with her husband Paul for 7 years. Lyn went on to become the school chaplain at Lakelands SHS for 2 years when she and her family moved to Perth in 1997. She went on be become an Area Chaplain for YouthCARE for the South West.
Then in 2001 Lyn Cannon's experience expanded when she became involved in coordinating a program for people with psychiatric illness for 3 years in Maylands.
Lyn returned to Murdoch University in 2004 completing her Bachelor of Psychology and Bachelor of Arts in Theology in 2010.
After moving with her husbands work to Merredin she continued studying part-time at Murdoch University and worked part-time for 2 years as the Family Counsellor for Wheatbelt Agcare based in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia. In this role Lyn travelled throughout the Wheatbelt providing Family Counselling for this region. She provided counselling and psychotherapy for adults, teenagers and children needing support with Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Trauma, Domestic Violence, Divorce, Parenting, Grief and Loss, Couples Counselling, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Co-dependancy, Anger Management, Sexual Abuse, and Suicide.
Once again Lyn and her husband moved with his work to Bridgetown in 2010. It was whilst in Bridgetown that Lyn returned to Murdoch University in 2012 to complete her Post Graduate Diploma of Counselling graduating in 2013.
Charis Counselling opened as a business in 2011 providing counselling and psychotherapy to the local community of Bridgetown - Charis Counselling was based at the Natural Therapy Centre in Bridgetown. Lyn Cannon was registered with Department of Child Protection providing counselling for children, teenagers and adults who they referred to her. Through Charis Counselling Lyn continued supporting people facing Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, Trauma, Grief and Loss, Relationship breakdown, living with Autism, and family breakup. During this time Lyn also worked with Henri Nouwen House co-facilitating a group for people who were in Co-Dependant relationships living with someone with a drug or alcohol addiction. Lyn also spent time as a co-facilitator of Pathways Program at Bunbury Prison for prisoners dealing with substance abuse.
Lyn Cannon began as a contract counsellor for Cancer Council WA in 2014 and continues in this role. Lyn has extensive experience working with people living with a cancer diagnosis or relatives of someone with a cancer diagnosis. Also journeying with those who are experiencing the grief and loss of a partner, parent, child or loved one to cancer.
Lyn Cannon completed the Advanced Training in Professional Supervision with Supervision WA in 2015 and continues to provide Professional Supervision to Counsellors, Social Workers, Psychotherapists, Chaplains, Clergy, and Pastoral Care workers.
In 2016 Lyn was employed as a trainer - training students for the Diploma of Counselling at Community Training Australia preparing students for careers in Counselling and other mental health roles.
Lyn is married with two adult sons and has spent most of her life in the country involved in farming, youth work, pastoral care and counselling roles.
